Cancer is a group of diseases, characterized by uncontrolled cellular growth with frequent cancer cells invasion to different body parts and spreading to other organs, a process referred to as metastasis. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Chemotherapy is the main approach used currently for the treatment and management of this disease especially disseminated malignant tumors. Unfortunately, most patients often relapse or have reduced responses to initial chemotherapy. Current therapeutic strategies are known to have substantial adverse effects, necessitating further study into alternate strategies, such as those derived from natural resources. Pterocarpuss species have been extensively used in folk medicine for thousands of years. However, there is a paucity of information on the cytotoxic properties of these plants. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of the selected Pterocarpuss species, namely Pterocarpuss santalinus. Cytotoxic activities were screened using an in vitro assay system of growth inhibition against human cancer cell lines. s. Cytotoxic activities were screened using an invitro assay system of growth inhibition against human cancer cell lines. The plant extract demonstrated selective cytotoxic activity and apoptosis in cancer cells. The results demonstrated that Pterocarpuss santalinus has strong cytotoxic effect by inducing apoptotic cell death, and causing arrest of cancer cells at different growth phases. Hence, Pterocarpuss santalinus has the potential to be further exploited for the discovery and development for new anticancer pharmaceuticals.

We have attempted to build QSAR models on TumorAssociated Carbonic Anhydrase, hCA IX inhibitory activity. The quality of prediction is high enough (Se =0 .2306, r2 =0.9027, F =40.1919, r2 cv =0.7716). The virtual molecular fragment that leads to a significant increase in the inhibitory activity of hCA IX is C2 HN3 . The virtual fragments, Br atom and NO2 lead to a significant decrease of the inhibitory activity value. The innovation of this work consists in not only exploring the structural attributes of bioactive molecules but also in its ability to predict in silico the structures of twenty eight new (not yet synthesized) compounds which may show Tumor-Associated Carbonic Anhydrase IX (hCAIX) inhibitory activity. This apart, search for more suitable compounds was made based on their pharmacokinetic behaviour and ease of synthesis. The molecules of the prediction set include many molecules having high computed activity.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most frequent type of gastrointestinal cancer. The present study explores role of wheatgrass and zinc as preventive therapy. Setting and Design: Forty-eight male rats divided into eight groups were given, diet with 1,2 Dimethylhydrazine (DMH), Zinc, wheatgrass, wheatgrass + zinc, DMH with zinc, DMH with wheatgrass, and DMH with a combination of zinc and wheatgrass. One group served as control. Protein expressions of p53, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), BCL2 Associated X (Bax) and adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) proteins were investigated using immunohistochemistry. Results:  Administration of DMH led to increased protein expression of p53 and Bcl-2 and reduced expression of APC and Bax. Zinc and wheatgrass supplementation was found to decrease Bcl-2 and p53 expression and increase expression of Bax and APC proteins.

Transient Potential Receptor (TRP) channels function to mediate multiple sensory functions such as vision, nociception, taste transduction, temperature sensation and pheromone signaling. Such channels in mammals serve as nonselective cation influx channels expressed in many tissues on mammalian cell surface membranes and these act to regulate the flow of Ca++, Mg++, and Mn++ into cells. TRP channels also serve as interactive responses for sensory phytochemical compounds (such as spices) to activate and open TRP channels for cation influx. Serving as interactive partners for TRPs, antimicrobial-like (AMPL) peptides constitute a unique class of naturally occurring agents that serve as the first line of defense of the mammalian innate (immediate) immune response system. The AMPLs provide protection and defense against microorganisms that gain entrance into the body; such microbes can include bacteria, parasites, and fungi. The present report reviews the interactive activities between the TRPs and the AMPLs that both aid and benefit physiological interactions in the course of cancer treatments, therapies, and chemotherapeutic procedures. Such therapeutic interactions between TRPs and AMPLs lead to propose the concept that tumor growth suppressive activities, exemplified by the interaction between TRPs and AMPs, can and do occur and could be effacious in treating various types of cancers such as gastrointestinal, sexual/reproductive, and urogenital malignancies.
